Thousands of eclipse tourists traveling to catch a glimpse of the total solar eclipse near St. Louis faced hours of bumper-to-bumper traffic, doubling travel times and causing significant delays, with some journeys taking up to eight hours. Even the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls from stranded travelers. Despite the challenges, most viewers remained undeterred and enjoyed the eclipse experience, as the traffic bottlenecks occurred along the path of totality, a corridor that crossed through 13 states.
Tens of thousands of people across the US experienced nightmarish traffic jams as they headed home after viewing the total solar eclipse, with highways in Indiana, Illinois, Vermont, Ohio, and Michigan affected. Rest stops reached capacity, exacerbating the congestion, and even New York City experienced traffic jams as people filled the streets to catch glimpses of the eclipse.
Traffic jams are reported on I-75 in Monroe County as spectators rush from Michigan into Ohio to witness the solar eclipse, causing slow traffic on US-23 and M-125. While most of Michigan will experience 99% totality, parts of Ohio, including Toledo, are in the path of 100% totality.
