A Norwegian Boeing 737 en route from Stockholm to Paris had to make an emergency landing after a tire exploded shortly after takeoff, causing a safe but unsettling incident with all 181 passengers returned to Stockholm. The cause of the tire failure remains unclear, but such incidents are rare.
NASA built the CR-990 Tire Assault Vehicle (TAV) using a modified remote-controlled tank to safely detonate dangerous Space Shuttle tires. The TAV, constructed from a 1/16 scale Tamiya Tiger II tank, featured custom-fabricated metal components and a camera attached to a drill motor. Costing less than $3,000 to build, the TAV successfully exploded nine hazardous tires and is now on display at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California.
