"Tennessee Republicans Push to Reverse Police Reforms Following Tyre Nichols's Death"

The Tennessee Senate has passed a bill that would essentially overturn Memphis' ban on pretextual traffic stops, with the aim of restoring law and order in the community. The bill, which had already passed in the state House, would block a Memphis City Council ordinance that banned such stops. While the bill's sponsors argue that it's about enforcing existing state laws and improving public safety, Democrats view it as Republican overreach that disregards local government decisions. The family of Tyre Nichols, whose death led to the ordinance, expressed deep disappointment with the bill's passage and emphasized the need for justice regarding routine traffic stops.

Tensions between the House and Senate chambers were evident, with House Majority Leader William Lamberth stating that despite knowing the Senate would only pass three bills, all 37 bills in the House should continue forward. Protesters demanding gun control filled the House committees, and two bills received the most attention, one of which would have expanded who could bring guns onto school property and the other allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to be tried as adults for gun-related offenses. The Senate passed a budget bill, legislation for a sales tax break on gun storage, and other bills, while the two chambers remained in a standoff over how to conclude the special session.
