The scam involved a fraudster posing as a "fraud investigator" from PNC Bank who convinced Bloom to liquidate her savings and transfer the funds to cryptocurrency to protect them from criminals. However, the scammer disappeared, leaving Bloom devastated and realizing she had been defrauded of everything. This type of fraud is increasingly common and targets older adults, who lost $588 million to tech support scams in 2022. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to fraud due to their limited understanding of technology and online safety.

Deceptive Amazon Ad on Google Leads to Microsoft Support Scam

A deceptive advertisement for Amazon in Google search results is redirecting users to a tech support scam posing as a Microsoft Defender alert. The scam locks up the browser in full-screen mode, making it difficult to exit without terminating the Google Chrome process. This is not the first instance of Google ads being abused to distribute malware, with threat actors creating replicas of legitimate sites to distribute trojanized programs. Google and Amazon have not yet responded to inquiries about this malvertising issue.
