"Urgent Warning: Parents Unknowingly Risking Babies' Lives with Sudden Death Syndrome"

The Lullaby Trust has cautioned parents against allowing babies to sleep in bouncers, swings, or beanbags, as it increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and suffocation. A survey found that many parents let their babies nap in these items, with 8% even allowing overnight sleep. The charity emphasizes that babies are safest sleeping on a flat, firm surface and recommends placing them on their backs with no loose bedding or padded sides. The warning coincides with Safer Sleep Week, aiming to raise awareness about protecting babies' airways during sleep.

Dangerous Baby Rocker Bassinets Recalled Over Suffocation Risks

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning to immediately stop using the 5in1 Rocker Bassinets sold online, including at Walmart, due to suffocation, strangulation, and fall hazards for infants. The Missouri-based importer of the bassinets, Rev Grace Import Inc., has not complied with the recall and has not provided a remedy to consumers. The bassinets lack required labeling and instructions, and consumers are advised to disassemble and discard them.

"CPSC Proposes Safety Rules for Infant Rockers and Nursing Pillows Following Fatalities"

Staff at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have recommended new safety rules for infant rockers after linking the popular product to 11 deaths and 88 injuries from 2011 to 2022. The proposed rules aim to prevent suffocation by making rockers firmer and flatter, requiring stability and safety tests, and addressing strangulation risks. The CPSC's four commissioners will meet on October 4 to decide whether to adopt the recommendations. The agency estimates that nearly 570,000 infant rockers are sold per year, and manufacturers could face redesign costs of around $80,000 per model. Some manufacturers have defended their rockers' safety, while others have expressed support for federal safety rules.

"Federal Staffers Propose Safety Measures for Nursing Pillows Following Infant Fatalities"

The staff of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recommended the implementation of federal safety requirements for nursing pillows in order to prevent infant deaths associated with the product. The recommendations include making the pillows firm enough to prevent suffocation, ensuring wide openings to avoid restricting infants' head movements, and prominently displaying warning labels. The CPSC staff cited 154 deaths involving nursing pillows from 2010 to 2022, with most infants dying after being placed to sleep on or with the pillows. The proposed requirements are expected to face opposition from the industry, which has defended the safety of its products.

Federal warning issued after more infant deaths linked to recalled Boppy loungers.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned parents and caregivers to stop using Boppy Newborn Loungers after two more infants died following a mass recall of the product in 2021. The recalled products made by The Boppy Company include Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers, and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers. More than 3 million Newborn Loungers were recalled in September 2021 after eight infants died as a result of using the product. The CPSC warned that the loungers posed a risk of suffocation if infants rolled, moved, or were placed on the lounger in a position that obstructed breathing.
