Meta's $10B Global Subsea Cable Ambition

Meta plans to invest over $10 billion in building a 40,000+ kilometer subsea cable, becoming the sole owner and user of this infrastructure. This project aims to support Meta's growing internet traffic needs and ensure reliable global connectivity, while avoiding geopolitical tensions. The cable will span from the U.S. to India via South Africa and Australia, forming a "W" shape. This move reflects a shift in subsea cable ownership from telecoms to tech giants, with potential implications for AI development in India.

Fiber optic cut causes widespread internet and phone outages in Western and Northwest Alaska.

Several North Slope and Northwest Alaska communities are experiencing internet and cell service interruptions due to a cut to the subsea fiber optic network, which might take up to two months to repair. Telecommunications service providers are looking for short-term solutions to bring service back online. Quintillion, which provides broadband connectivity in Arctic Alaska, experienced a subsea fiber cut about 34 miles north of Oliktok Point, offshore from Utqiagvik, causing a systemwide outage affecting several communities. Repair crews need to wait until the ice breaks up around Oliktok Point, which is expected to happen at the end of June or early July.

China's $500M Subsea Internet Cable to Challenge US-backed Project.

Chinese state-owned telecom firms are developing a $500 million undersea fiber-optic internet cable network, known as EMA (Europe-Middle East-Asia), that would link Asia, the Middle East and Europe to rival a similar U.S.-backed project. The cable would be manufactured and laid by China’s HMN Technologies Co Ltd and would be subsidized by the Chinese state. Undersea cables carry more than 95% of all international internet traffic and have become weapons of influence in an escalating competition between the United States and China.
