Famous stray cats of Puerto Rico's historic fortress face removal

The U.S. National Park Service has announced a plan to remove approximately 200 stray cats from the grounds surrounding a historic fortress in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The agency cited concerns about disease transmission to humans as the reason for the removal. However, cat lovers and animal welfare organizations have expressed dismay, arguing that finding homes for such a large number of cats within the proposed six-month timeframe is unrealistic. The plan calls for an animal welfare organization to trap the cats and decide their fate, including adoption, foster care, or placement in a shelter. If the organization fails to remove the cats within six months, a removal agency will be hired.

MADACC Suspends Stray Cat Intake Services Amid Virus Outbreak

The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) has temporarily suspended its stray cat intake services due to a rise in feline panleukopenia cases within the shelter. The increase in disease is attributed to the unprecedented numbers of stray cats being brought in. MADACC is partnering with the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine's Shelter Medicine Program to manage the current population and transfer healthy animals to other shelters. The pause in stray cat intake will not affect animal adoptions or normal dog stray services. Vaccination is emphasized as the strongest defense against the disease.
