Ancient Lake Ohrid village holds Europe's oldest secrets
Archaeologists have discovered an 8,500-year-old village beneath Lake Ohrid in Albania, making it the oldest known lakeside settlement in Europe. The village, located in the village of Lin, was home to between 200 and 500 people and featured houses built on stilts. The discovery challenges previous assumptions about the age of lakeshore settlements in the region and provides insights into the development of agriculture, craftsmanship, and fishing during that time period. The settlement was fortified with thousands of spiked planks, but the purpose of the fortification remains unknown. Further exploration and study of the site are expected to take another two decades.
