The Rising Influence of Transgender Health Bills in the US

Some Democratic-led states are enacting measures aimed at protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ youth.

Zephyr defiantly stayed put even after the Republican House speaker said she couldn’t be there and a House security officer threatened to move the bench where she had set up her laptop. Republicans had wanted Zephyr to participate from behind the doors of the House Minority’s offices a day after they voted to ban her from the House floor for the rest of the session, which ends early next week.

Thousands of people rallied across the US on Friday in support of transgender rights and their resilience amid an increasingly hostile environment. The rallies came as Republican lawmakers nationwide have pursued hundreds of proposals this year to push back on LGBTQ+ rights, particularly those of transgender residents. At least 11 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for minors. President Joe Biden issued a statement supporting Transgender Day of Visibility and reaffirming that transgender Americans deserve to be safe and supported in every community.
