"Congress Urged to Fund Installation of Border Fentanyl Scanners to Combat Smuggling"
Sen. Jon Tester is urging Congress to allocate funds for the installation of fentanyl scanning equipment at the southern border, which currently remains unused due to lack of funding. Tester blames Republicans for blocking bipartisan border security legislation that would have provided the necessary funds. Customs and Border Protection states that the majority of seized fentanyl comes through legal ports of entry, and acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller emphasizes the need for funding to install the scanners, aiming to increase the scanning of personal vehicles from less than 5% to 40% by the end of 2025. Congressional Republicans have also raised concerns about the effectiveness of fentanyl scanners at the border, prompting a review by the Government Accountability Office.
