"Oregon Labor Union Aims to Overturn Self-Serve Gas Law by 2024"

UFCW Local 555, one of Oregon's largest labor unions, has filed an initiative petition to reinstate a ban on self-serve gas in the state, citing concerns about job loss and safety. The union aims to put the decision of who should pump gas in the hands of voters in November 2024. The ban on self-serve gas was repealed earlier this year, allowing stations to offer both self-serve and attendant options. Lawmakers argue that the change was necessary due to labor shortages and the need for simplified public policy. The union will need to gather over 117,000 signatures by July 2024 to get the issue on the ballot.

"Union Pushes to Restore Ban on Self-Serve Gas in Oregon"

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 555, one of Oregon's largest labor unions, has filed an initiative to reinstate the state's ban on self-serve gas. The ban was lifted earlier this year, allowing Oregonians to pump their own gas or have an attendant do it for them. The union argues that self-serve gas has led to job losses and increased safety risks at gas stations. Former Portland City Commissioner Steve Novick supports the initiative, expressing concerns about losing jobs and the inconvenience it may cause for people with disabilities. The initiative needs to collect around 117,000 signatures by July to be included on the ballot next November.

Navigating the Varying Rules of Self-Serve Gas Stations

Oregon residents are adjusting to the new self-serve gas bill, but rules vary among gas stations, causing confusion. Some stations have designated "Full Serve" and "Self-Serve" lines, while others allow customers to inform attendants if they want to pump their own gas. Self-serve gas is allowed at all hours in 20 counties, while the remaining 16 counties can have no more than 50% of fuel pumps available for self-serve. Gas station attendants and managers are willing to assist customers who need help or want to learn.

Oregonians to Pump Their Own Gas as Self-Serve Becomes Law

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has declined to veto House Bill 2426, allowing it to become law and ending a 72-year restriction on most drivers pumping their own gas. The legislation will permit Oregon gas stations to open up to half of their pumps for self-serve gas, while still requiring stations to staff at least half of their pumps for customers who prefer not to pump their own gas. The law will go into effect once Kotek signs it or on August 4 if she refuses to sign.
