The Tipping Debate: Americans Divided on Etiquette and Control

A Bankrate survey reveals that 30% of Americans believe tipping in the US has become "out of control," with even self-checkout machines now asking for tips. While 41% of respondents think businesses should pay employees better instead of relying heavily on tips, 32% are annoyed by pre-entered tip screens. Tipping frequency has been declining since 2019, with 73% of adults always tipping at sit-down restaurants in 2022 compared to 77% in 2019. Researchers suggest that companies are using tips to shift the responsibility of fair wages onto consumers. However, nearly half of Americans still tip at least 20% at sit-down restaurants. The increase in negative sentiment has led some business owners to reduce suggested tip amounts or remove the option altogether.

The Tipping System Debate: Perspectives and Practices.

Tipping culture in the US has been criticized as companies introduce virtual prompts suggesting amounts to tip, even at self-checkout machines. Customers are becoming less inclined to tip and believe that companies should pay their employees fair wages instead of putting the responsibility on customers. A recent survey shows that 66% of Americans have a negative view of tipping, and 41% believe that businesses should take responsibility for paying their employees better. The total number of consumers who say they always tip has decreased by 10% over the past two years, and 16% of survey respondents said they would be willing to pay higher prices if we could do away with tipping altogether.

Customers report feeling obligated to leave a tip as they question where and to whom the extra money is actually going. Businesses are increasingly embracing the option to boost pay for workers outside of salaries, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal.
