The US Navy intervened to prevent Iranian Navy ships from seizing two oil tankers in separate incidents in the Gulf of Oman. An Iranian ship opened fire during the second seizure attempt.
The U.S. Navy successfully prevented Iranian forces from seizing two commercial tanker ships in the Gulf of Oman. Iranian forces approached a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel but left when a U.S. destroyer arrived. Later, shots were fired at a Bahamian-flagged tanker before U.S. forces intervened. Iran has attempted to seize vessels in the Gulf of Oman and has targeted 20 internationally flagged merchant vessels since 2021.
