Emmys Reject Category Change for 'Schmigadoon!' and Question Lead Actor Eligibility in 'Jury Duty' Submission

The Television Academy has denied Apple's petition to move "Schmigadoon!" from the comedy series category to the scripted variety category for the upcoming Emmy Awards. The scripted variety category is defined as shows that are primarily scripted or loosely-scripted improv with discrete scenes, satire, musical numbers, monologues, comedy stand-ups, sketches, etc. "Schmigadoon!" has ongoing story elements and recurring characters, making it more suitable for the comedy series category. The show will have to compete for one of the eight spots in outstanding comedy series, where two other Apple series, "Ted Lasso" and "Shrinking," are already competing. Emmy submissions are due on May 9.

"Schmigadoon!" Season 2: A Jazzed-Up Revival for All Viewers.

"Schmigadoon!" Season 2 takes the musical parody to a wider scope with a new setting in Schmicago, where the show embraces a different storytelling rhythm and a fuller visual language. The show's pacing and playfulness work from a baseline and indulge in its own flourishes where they're best suited. The new season also has a better balance between the relationship of the main characters and the rest of the Schmicagoans. The show continues to stand alongside shows like "Documentary Now!" and "American Vandal" as shows that work on an inside baseball level and out of context, too.

'Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies' - A Prequel Series That Celebrates Teen Friendship

"Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies" is a surprisingly good prequel to the iconic movie, with a talented and diverse young cast and a bit of edge. Meanwhile, the second season of "Schmigadoon!" shifts to the edgier, sexier fare of the late 1960s and '70s, with riffs on classic musicals. While the musical parodies are fun, the story feels slight. Both shows highlight the boom time for musical series in the streaming era.
