Revolutionary Dry Mouth Solution: Long-lasting Relief with Innovative Hydrogel-based Remedy
Scientists at the University of Leeds have developed a saliva substitute that is up to five times more effective than existing products for individuals with dry mouth. The novel technology, utilizing microgel and hydrogel components, offers improved moisture retention and comfort by binding to the surface of the mouth and trapping water. Laboratory tests showed that the new substance had a longer-lasting effect and lower desorption compared to commercial saliva substitutes. The dairy version slightly outperformed the vegan version. The non-toxic and non-caloric ingredients used in the substitute make it a promising solution for individuals with dry mouth conditions, which can lead to discomfort swallowing, malnutrition, and dental problems. The researchers aim to translate the technology into commercially available products to enhance the quality of life for those affected.
