
Reforming Horse Racing Safety: Lessons from Churchill Downs
The sudden deaths of six horses, including two by the same trainer, at Churchill Downs has left the horse racing industry questioning what happened. While horse deaths at racetracks are not uncommon, sudden deaths are rare. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has suspended the trainer, Saffie Joseph Jr., and is awaiting necropsy results. The deaths have raised concerns about the safety of horses and riders, and the integrity of the sport.
