The Fascination with the Titanic Wreck: From Discovery to Controversy.

The discovery of the Titanic wreckage in 1985 was part of a top-secret U.S. Navy mission to locate two sunken nuclear submarines. Robert Ballard, an oceanographer, had approached the Navy for funding to search for the Titanic, but they wanted him to photograph the wrecks of the USS Thresher and USS Scorpion first. Ballard realized that the debris trail from the submarines could lead him to the Titanic, which he found on the last day of his mission. The discovery was celebrated, but Ballard described the scene as that of a haunted house.
