Pipo Derani secures pole position for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Road America, setting a quick lap time of 1:47.730 in his No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac. Matt Campbell in the No. 7 Penske Porsche 963 came in second, followed by Sebastien Bourdais in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing Cadillac. George Kurtz took pole in the LMP2 class, while Alex Riberas and Madison Snow claimed pole positions in the GTD Pro and GTD classes, respectively.
NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Chandler Smith loses brakes during the Road America 180 race, causing him to crash into a wall to slow down his car. Smith came out of the incident unharmed, but the brakes failed without warning. The race was ultimately won by Sam Mayer, who secured his first career win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
AJ Allmendinger secured the pole position for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Road America, setting a new track record. Cole Custer will start second, followed by Justin Allgaier, Riley Herbst, and Sam Mayer. Sage Karam made history for Sam Hunt Racing by qualifying sixth, while teammate Kaz Grala qualified ninth. The race is scheduled to start at 3:05 p.m. with coverage provided by NBC and Peacock.
NASCAR Xfinity teams are preparing for Saturday's race at Road America, where a different driver has won each of the past 13 races. AJ Allmendinger, Jeremy Clements, and Justin Allgaier, former winners, are entered in this weekend's race. Meanwhile, Craftsman Truck Series teams are practicing and qualifying at Richmond Raceway for the regular-season finale that sets the 10-driver playoff field.
IndyCar's first race on Road America's new surface exceeded expectations, with a good old-fashioned race featuring 444 on-track passes, the most at the track since the series started coming in 2016. Winner Alex Palou made his weekend more difficult by crashing Saturday but earned the third starting position, ran near the front all day and took the lead for good seconds after completing the 48th of 55 laps. The undulating 4.014 miles of fresh asphalt, with its 14 turns and 195 mph top speeds, allowed drivers to venture off the super-grippy racing line and make some passes after all.
Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing won the IndyCar race at Road America, his third win of the season and seventh of his career, extending his championship lead to 74 points. Palou passed Colton Herta with six laps remaining to take the win, while Josef Newgarden finished second and Pato O’Ward third. Palou’s teammate Scott Dixon finished fourth, and Herta finished fifth after leading the most laps. The win was also Chip Ganassi Racing’s 250th motor racing win and 139th triumph in IndyCar.
Colton Herta earns the NTT P1 Award for the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America presented by AMR, with teammate Kyle Kirkwood starting sixth. Thirteen drivers in the top 17 starting spots are searching for their first win of 2023, including seven still searching for their maiden victory in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. The track is expected to be treacherous, with some big names starting toward the back of the 27-car field. Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, and Emerson Fittipaldi each have scored three wins, the most by an INDYCAR SERIES driver at the track.
The Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America presented by AMR, the eighth of 17 races on the 2023 IndyCar calendar, will be shown live on USA Network instead of NBC. The final 10 races of the season include six races on NBC and three races on USA Network, with this Sunday’s race being one of the three in the latter category. All nine of those races are also set to be shown live on Peacock. Xfinity/Comcast customers will need to start a paid subscription of either Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus in order to retain access after Tuesday, June 26.
Colton Herta secured pole position for the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America, with Pato O'Ward in second and Alex Palou in third. Herta's lap was just 0.330s shy of breaking Dario Franchitti's lap record from 2000. Kyle Kirkwood was unable to participate in the Fast Six after losing his engine, but will have a fresh unit installed for Sunday's race. A.J. Foyt Racing's Benjamin Pedersen and Santino Ferrucci captured 10th and 11th, respectively, while Andretti's Devlin DeFrancesco made the Fast 12 and held 12th into the race.
Will Power and Scott Dixon collided during Practice No. 2 at Road America, with Power's car hitting the wall and Dixon's car spinning around and hitting the wall again. Power was angry and confronted Dixon, but later calmed down. Dixon apologized for the incident, saying he didn't see Power. Both teams had around 2.5 hours to repair their cars before qualifying. The incident was one of five red flags during the practice session. Alexander Rossi finished fastest on the timing charts for the second consecutive day.
Reigning IndyCar champion Will Power shoved Scott Dixon after the two were involved in a crash during practice at Road America. Both cars were severely damaged, with only three hours to rebuild them ahead of qualifying. Power was upset and directed his anger towards Dixon, Romain Grosjean, and the Road America course.
Alexander Rossi topped the second practice session at Road America, with Scott Dixon and Will Power colliding and causing a red flag. Championship leader Alex Palou also crashed, damaging his car, while Santino Ferrucci and Simon Pagenaud also caused red flags. Dario Franchitti's qualifying track record will be tested in qualifying later.
Alexander Rossi topped the 27-car field in the first practice session of the NTT IndyCar Series at Road America with a best lap of 1m41.7790s. David Malukas and Alex Palou followed in second and third place, respectively. The newly-paved track and Firestone's new tires produced impressive speeds, with Rossi knocking more than three seconds off his most impressive lap prior to the repave. The session provided an opportunity for teams to understand the differences between the tires used last week and the new Firestone Reds.
Ryan Hunter-Reay will replace Conor Daly at Ed Carpenter Racing for the upcoming IndyCar race at Road America. Hunter-Reay, who has 18 career IndyCar wins, including the 2014 Indianapolis 500 and a championship in 2012, will drive ECR's Chevrolet-powered #20 entry. Team owner Ed Carpenter hopes that Hunter-Reay's experience and technical abilities will help improve the team's competitiveness.
