Callum Ilott will switch to his teammate Agustin Canapino's car for the Indy 500 after his brand-new Dallara-Chevrolet was deemed unsafe. Ilott was the slowest of the 34 cars on Wednesday and 32nd on Thursday. Juncos Hollinger Racing team chief Ricardo Juncos said that the new car "has not run good all week" and that safety is the top priority for their drivers.
Pato O’Ward topped the second practice session ahead of the Long Beach IndyCar race, which was marred by a new curb that was not communicated to the teams. Callum Ilott and Rinus VeeKay both hit the curb, causing damage to their cars. The rest of the session passed without incident, and O’Ward finished ahead of Kyle Kirkwood by just 0.0167s. Romain Grosjean was third fastest, followed by Colton Herta and Scott McLaughlin. Qualifying takes place later in the day.
Callum Ilott has called for reimbursement of damage sustained by his IndyCar after a kerb was replaced overnight without all teams being informed. Ilott and Rinus VeeKay both appeared to clip the new kerbing and were launched airborne momentarily before hitting the tyre barrier at the exit of Turn 5. Ilott said he hadn’t been made aware of any track changes overnight and added: “If they did and didn’t tell us, they can pay for the damage, because that’s a joke”. IndyCar didn’t send out a series-wide communication because the circuit specifications hadn’t changed compared to 2022.
