"University of Utah's $100M AI Research Initiative Targets Societal Challenges"
The University of Utah has launched a $100 million research initiative called the Responsible AI Initiative, aimed at exploring the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) to address societal issues. Led by the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute, the initiative will focus on achieving "societal good" while protecting privacy, civil rights, and promoting accountability and transparency. The university aims to leverage AI to tackle region-specific challenges such as public services, healthcare, sustainability, and water resources. The initiative will bring together experts from various disciplines and establish an internal governance council and external advisory board. Funding will come from non-tuition sources, and the university expects additional future funding.
