Michigan State University's Board of Trustees has approved a nearly 7% increase in residence hall rates for first-year students this fall due to a 10% increase in gasoline and energy costs and a 25% spike in food prices. The increase will not affect second-year students, who are required to live in campus housing. The university's apartment rates will also increase by 5% and 3% for 1855 Place and Spartan Village, respectively. The increase in food service program costs is purely food-related and doesn't involve labor, according to Vennie Gore, senior vice president for student life and engagement at MSU.
