ReedPop Explores Sale of Leading Gaming Websites and Publications

ReedPop, the parent company of Gamer Network, is exploring the potential sale of its UK-based gaming media business, which includes Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, VG247, Rock Paper Shotgun, and Dicebreaker. The decision comes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on events, leading to the closure of USGamer and EGX Rezzed. ReedPop believes that new ownership will provide better conditions for the growth of the business, but the sale does not affect other ReedPop properties such as MCM ComicCon and EGX.

The future of the once-flagship event of the games industry doesn't look bright, and it's possible revival plans could involve relocating outside of Los Angeles. In E3's absence, many smaller events took place in LA this month, including producer Geoff Keighley's rival Summer Game Fest, Ubisoft Forward, and an Xbox Showcase.

The pandemic, economic headwinds, and publishers' experimentation with balancing in-person events with digital marketing streams have contributed to the collapse in support for the event. The E3 brand is also tarnished due to poorly conceived efforts to make the show a public event and a disastrous data leak. The gaming industry needs to conduct a brutally honest accounting of the event's actual value if it is ever to come back.
