The redtail garra, a popular fish found in aquariums, has been classified as a new species called Garra panitvongi. Previously unrecognized as a distinct species, experts discovered the redtail garra during fieldwork along the Kasat River at the Thailand-Myanmar border. The fish has a unique color scheme, specialized mouths, and a hardened snout used for defense. This discovery highlights the need for more scientific identification of fish in various regions to better protect biodiversity. The new species name honors ichthyologist Nonn Panitvong, who has dedicated his life to promoting biodiversity.
