Accomplice in Murder of Ex-NFL Player's Pregnant Girlfriend Dies in Prison
Van Brett Watkins, the accomplice in former NFL player Rae Carruth's plot to kill his pregnant girlfriend in 1999, has died at the age of 63. Watkins, who fired the shots that killed Cherica Adams, was serving a prison sentence of over 50 years. He pleaded guilty in exchange for testifying against Carruth, who was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Carruth was released from prison in 2018.
