Accomplice in Murder of Rae Carruth's Girlfriend Dies in Prison

Van Brett Watkins, the man hired to kill Cherica Adams, the pregnant girlfriend of former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth, has died in prison at the age of 63. Watkins was sentenced to over 50 years for the murder of Adams, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her death in 1999. Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, discharging a firearm into occupied property, and using an instrument with intent to destroy an unborn child. Adams' child, Chancellor Adams, survived the shooting.
