Prince William Supervisors Approve Controversial Digital Gateway Data Center Project Despite Protests

The Prince William County board of supervisors has approved plans for a massive data center complex known as the "Digital Gateway" in a mostly rural area near Interstate 66 and a Civil War battlefield site. The controversial project faced opposition from nearby residents who raised concerns about environmental damage, noise pollution, and the strain on the power grid. When completed, the complex is expected to feature up to 34 data centers spread across 2,100 acres, making the county one of the world's largest hubs for internet traffic. Supporters highlight the estimated $400 million in annual tax revenue it will generate, while opponents argue that it will harm the environment and ruin the rural character of the area.

Election Upsets Shake Prince William County Board of Supervisors.

Ann B. Wheeler, the Democratic chair of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, lost her party's primary election to Deshundra Jefferson, a relatively unknown challenger who campaigned heavily on the issue of data center development in the county. The outcome of the primaries is likely to affect discussions surrounding a proposed 2,100-acre data center complex in the Gainesville area, which the current board is preparing to vote on later this summer. With both Jefferson and Republican nominee Jeanine Lawson opposed to the plan, opponents of the project say that the board should delay the decision or reject the plan outright, arguing that voters have weighed in on an issue that has generated concerns about noise and potential harm to the surrounding environment.
