Rising Extreme Weather Displaces Millions of Children, UNICEF Reports
A new report from UNICEF reveals that over the past six years, more than 43 million children have been displaced from their homes due to floods, storms, droughts, and wildfires, with 20,000 children being displaced every day. Floods and storms accounted for 95% of all child displacements, while drought and wildfires accounted for the rest. East Asia and the Pacific were particularly affected, with the Philippines, India, and China experiencing the highest numbers of displacements. The report highlights the vulnerability of children to exploitation, trafficking, and abuse, as well as the risks of malnutrition and disease. As the climate crisis worsens, the frequency and severity of extreme weather events are expected to increase, further exacerbating the displacement of children.
