US Army Equipped with Advanced Precision Strike Missiles, Enhancing Long-Range Engagement

The U.S. Army has confirmed the receipt of its first operational Precision Strike Missiles (PrSMs), which provide an early operational capability ahead of a formal declaration of initial operational capability next year. The PrSMs are designed to engage static targets and can be fired from existing launchers. The Army plans to acquire at least 3,986 PrSMs and is also working on future variants with improved capabilities, including engaging moving targets and extending the maximum range. The introduction of PrSMs enhances the Army's long-range strike capabilities.

US Army Equipped with Advanced Precision Strike Missiles, Enhancing Long-Range Engagement

The US Army has received its first delivery of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), a new short-range ballistic missile that will replace the powerful MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS). The PrSM has a range of 250 miles and can be equipped with a cluster munition payload. The introduction of the PrSM may alleviate strains on the US stockpile and potentially create opportunities for more ATACMS to be sent to Ukraine, which has previously received a small number of ATACMS missiles. However, the Biden administration has expressed concerns about the need for more funding from Congress to provide Ukraine with the necessary security assistance to defend against the ongoing Russian invasion.

Raytheon and Northrop Grumman compete for Army's Precision Strike Missile contract.

Raytheon has partnered with Northrop Grumman to develop a future increment of the US Army's Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), after exiting the competition in early 2020. The Army awarded Raytheon a $97.7m contract in February to advance its design for the Long Range Maneuverable Fires program, planned to become the PrSM Increment 4 effort. The two companies will design, build and test the propulsion subsystem for DeepStrike-ER, which they describe as an "advanced missile solution that will demonstrate the capability to achieve the Army's desired range and effectiveness against next-generation threats."

Top Defense Companies Compete to Build Next-Gen Precision Strike Missile for US Army.

The US Army has selected Lockheed Martin and a Raytheon Technologies-Northrop Grumman team to develop a new missile form factor and propulsion system for the service’s Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Increment 4, which has been renamed the Long Range Maneuverable Fires (LRMF) missile. The new missile is expected to have a range of at least 1,000 km, potentially double the range of the current version. The Army has allocated $33.3 million to Lockheed Martin and almost $100 million to the Raytheon team for the development and demonstration of the new missile.
