"Vatican's Historic Beatification: Polish Family Martyred for Protecting Jews"
The Vatican has held an unprecedented beatification ceremony for a Polish family of nine who were executed by the Nazis during World War II for sheltering Jews. The Ulma family, including a married couple and their small children, were declared martyrs for their faith by Pope Francis last year. This is the first time an entire family has been beatified. The ceremony took place in the village of Markowa, Poland, and was attended by Polish President Andrzej Duda and thousands of pilgrims. The beatification has theological implications for the Catholic Church's ideas of saints and martyrs, particularly regarding the unborn child of the pregnant mother who was executed.
