"Chaos in the Commons: The Speaker's Role and Gaza Tensions"

The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, is facing calls for resignation after a Gaza-ceasefire debate led to chaos in the Commons. The Speaker, who is politically impartial, has the important duties of controlling debates, deciding who can speak, and upholding parliamentary rules. Sir Lindsay's decision to allow a vote on a Labour amendment during an SNP opposition day led to criticism and calls for his resignation, with more than 60 MPs expressing no confidence in him. However, there is no formal mechanism for MPs to oust the Speaker from their role, and former Speakers are traditionally offered a life peerage in the House of Lords.
