The Archdiocese of Baltimore has finalized a plan to reduce the number of parishes from 61 to 23, preserving some historic churches while closing or repurposing others. The Archbishop of St. Louis has announced the closure of 35 parishes and the reassignment of 155 priests in the most significant reorganization of the Catholic Church in St. Louis history. The downsizing of the archdiocese, called "All Things New," will reshape it from 178 individual parishes into 134. The changes will affect the entire region, with nearly half of the closures in north St. Louis and north St. Louis County. The parish closings and mergers do not necessarily mean that the church buildings associated with those parishes will also close.
