Pajaro Reopens to Residents After Levee Breach and Flooding

Pajaro residents are allowed to return home for the first time since a levee breach led to mass flooding on March 11. Re-entry will allow residents to see their homes and belongings, and begin the cleaning process. Officials are telling people they shouldn't return to living in their homes until they have been cleaned and cleared of any health concerns, such as mold. Many homes in Pajaro were still without power Thursday morning, and as of the last report, no homes had running water or working sewage. Cleaning, toilet, showers, handwashing, and laundry stations, along with bottled water, and information booths are available at Pajaro Park and Pajaro Middle School.

Governor Newsom assesses storm damage and promises aid for Pajaro.

Governor Gavin Newsom visited the flood-damaged area of Pajaro and promised long-term support for the community. He hopes for a federal emergency declaration and aid to help rebuild the levee and prevent further flooding. Short-term aid is on the way, with $600 checks being sent out to farmworkers affected by the floods. The governor is working with the Army Corps to speed up the 5-7 year process of overhauling the Pajaro levee.
