Iam Tongi Makes History as First Pacific Islander to Win 'American Idol' Season 21
Iam Tongi, an 18-year-old from Oahu, Hawaii, made history by becoming the first Pacific Islander singer to win "American Idol." Tongi won the show's 21st season after an emotional performance of his original song, "I'll Be Seeing You," dedicated to his late father. Country singer Megan Danielle placed second, and Colin Stough came in third. Tongi paid tribute to his home state multiple times throughout the season, with covers of "Cool Down" by Kolohe Kai and "Lava" from the Disney short film of the same name set on a Pacific island.
