Mayor Adams Takes Action on Migrant Crisis During DC Visit
New York City Mayor Eric Adams traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with congressional leaders and appeal for more federal aid to address the city's overwhelmed social services due to the influx of over 140,000 migrants since last year. Adams emphasized that New Yorkers are angry and in need of help, stating that the asylum seeker crisis is a national problem requiring a national solution. The city has faced deep budget cuts in areas such as policing, sanitation, and education, with Adams attributing the cuts to the significant amount of money spent on the migrant crisis. Adams called for a "real decompression strategy" involving granting more migrants the right to work and expanding the coalition of mayors seeking federal assistance. The Biden administration has provided over $770 million in support to communities taking in migrants and has deployed personnel to assist with work permits and immigration education. However, the requested emergency funding for border operations has stalled in Congress.
