Unveiling a Novel Symbiotic Bond: Orchids and Fruit Flies Forge Unprecedented Connection
Scientists have discovered a unique plant-animal relationship between orchids and fruit flies. The non-photosynthetic orchid Gastrodia foetida attracts fruit flies by emitting a mushroom-like smell. The flies get trapped in the flowers and carry pollen to other plants, completing pollination. After successful pollination, the flowers decay, and fruit fly larvae consume the fallen petals. The larvae then develop into adult flies. This discovery represents the first evidence of nursery pollination in orchids, suggesting an evolutionary transition towards mutualistic symbiosis.
