Massive Amounts of Uranium Missing in Libya, Raising Nuclear Security Concerns

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that 2.5 tons of natural uranium have gone missing from a site in Libya, raising security and safety concerns. The uranium was in the form of uranium ore concentrate and was not present as previously declared during an inspection carried out by agency safeguards inspectors. While natural uranium cannot immediately be used for energy production or bomb fuel, it could be refined to weapons-grade material over time and may also carry radiological risks in the event of prolonged exposure. The IAEA is carrying out further activities to clarify the circumstances of the removal of the nuclear material and its current location.

IAEA reports 2.5 tons of uranium missing from Libyan site.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that 2.5 tons of natural uranium stored in a site in Libya have gone missing, raising safety and proliferation concerns. While natural uranium cannot immediately be used for energy production or bomb fuel, each ton of natural uranium can be refined to 5.6 kilograms of weapons-grade material over time. The IAEA has not provided many details on the missing uranium, but its acknowledgment that the uranium went missing at a "previously declared site" narrows the possibilities.
