The Challenges of Clock Synchronization

Clock synchronization is complex and involves protocols like PTP and NTP, with hardware timestamping being crucial for high precision. Various applications, from high-frequency trading to audio engineering, require different levels of accuracy, and emerging technologies like White Rabbit achieve sub-nanosecond synchronization. The discussion highlights the challenges, hardware considerations, and the importance of understanding the underlying principles of timekeeping in distributed systems.

"Creator of NTP Protocol, Essential for Billions of Devices, Passes Away at 85"

Dr. David L. Mills, the inventor of the Network Time Protocol (NTP) that synchronizes time across computer systems and networks, passed away at the age of 85. His creation, NTP, has become a cornerstone of modern digital infrastructure, operating on billions of devices worldwide. Mills, who faced challenges due to his blindness, also made significant contributions to Internet architecture and was widely recognized for his work in network protocols and timekeeping.

Retro Flip Clock Goes High-Tech with NTP Upgrade

Wolfgang Jung upgraded a 1960s Copal flip clock by replacing its dead synchronous AC motor with a modern stepper motor, and adding a Trinamic TMC2225 stepper motor driver, a Wemos D1 Mini, and a small 5 V power supply on a small PCB that fit the original housing. The clock now uses WiFi to connect to an NTP server to get the correct time, and an IR proximity sensor near the lowest digit to count the number of digits that have flipped over and deduce the current state of the display.
