Hazing and Sexual Assault Allegations Rock New Mexico State University.

Former New Mexico State University basketball players Deuce Benjamin and Shak Odunewu held a press conference on Wednesday to speak out about their experiences with abuse within the program, which they claim was allowed by the coaching staff. Benjamin, who was named the Gatorade high school player of the year in 2021, dropped out of the program before ever taking the court for the Aggies after several of his teammates allegedly harassed him in the locker room. NMSU faces legal action over alleged hazing and sexual assault.

Two members of the New Mexico State University basketball team have filed a civil lawsuit against the university, former head coach Greg Heiar, assistant coach Dominique Taylor, and three other NMSU basketball players in relation to the alleged hazing incident that took place within the team. The suit alleges that the team's behavior was out of control in the locker room and on the road, and that the behavior was rarely addressed or limited by coaching staff. The lawsuit comes after the university suspended the 2022-2023 men's basketball program and fired now-former head coach Greg Heiar amid several incidents that not only include alleged hazing, but an incident where a member of the NMSU basketball team was seen on video shooting and killing a student from the University of New Mexico.

Hooten had six 20 plus win seasons during his time at Sam Houston State and is known for building hard-nosed, defensive-minded teams with character and integrity. NMSU is transitioning from the WAC to Conference USA, and Hooten's Division One coaching experience makes him a good fit for the program.
