Link Between Parenteral Nutrition and Retinopathy of Prematurity Discovered
A retrospective study of over 11,000 premature infants in Sweden found that infants who received parenteral nutrition for at least 14 days were significantly more likely to develop retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and require treatment for the condition. Clinicians may consider using an updated clinical decision support tool that takes into account the duration of parenteral nutrition. Further research is needed to understand the impact of neonatal nutrition on intestinal and neurovascular development.
