Arzest, the co-developer of Balan Wonderworld, is leading the development of Sonic Superstars, a brand new classic Sonic game, with Naoto Ohshima, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic Team's vice president of product development, Takashi Iizuka, stated that they needed someone who understands the classic Sonic series and gameplay format to execute the final product well. The game will balance classic Sonic with more modern features and borrows from a few different classic Sonic games.

Sega's Sonic Superstars promises classic 2D gameplay with new surprises.

Sega's upcoming Sonic game, Sonic Superstars, is being developed by Arzest, the studio run by the original creator of Sonic, Naoto Ohshima. Ohshima will be returning to the series for the first time in over 20 years. Sonic Team had originally intended to collaborate with Sonic Mania developer Christian Whitehead, but plans fell through. Sonic Superstars will feature co-op support for up to four players and will be released in fall 2023 on multiple platforms.

Sonic Superstars, a new entry in the series blending classic gameplay with 2.5D visuals, will feature a new character designed by Sonic designer Naoto Ohshima, who also designed Sonic the Hedgehog and Eggman. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and classic Amy Rose will travel across new zones located in the North Star Islands.
