To celebrate Johann Strauss II's 200th birthday and the ESA's 50th anniversary, the 'Blue Danube' waltz will be live-performed and transmitted into space, passing Mars in less than a second and reaching Voyager 1 in 23 hours, highlighting Europe's space achievements and cultural heritage.
In 1977, NASA launched Voyager 1, a space probe carrying the Voyager Golden Records, a pair of phonographic records containing a selection of music and sounds meant to represent life on Earth. The records include classical music, indigenous music, folk songs, and popular tracks like Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." They also feature recordings of Earth's sounds and greetings in 55 different languages. While it is uncertain if the records will ever be played or found, Voyager 1 currently faces technical difficulties in transmitting data back to Earth.
