Belize Achieves Malaria-Free Status.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Belize as malaria-free after the country achieved a significant reduction in malaria cases, down from 10,000 in 1994 to zero indigenous cases in 2019. The WHO praised Belize for its public health efforts, including the distribution of mosquito nets treated with insecticide and the encouragement of indoor insecticide spraying. The certification is given when a country shows "rigorous, credible evidence" of no transmission of malaria within its borders for at least three consecutive years. Belize is the third country to receive this certification in 2021, after Azerbaijan and Tajikistan.
