NBC News correspondent Morgan Chesky was hospitalized with high-altitude pulmonary edema while on a trip to Utah’s Zion National Park. Chesky, who is based out of Dallas, Texas, shared photos of his scenic trip on Instagram Wednesday but interrupted the carousel with a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed with some sort of breathing tube. The broadcaster explained in the caption that he developed a fever after hiking Bryce Canyon and couldn’t catch his breath, but decided to try to hike in Zion the next day anyways. Chesky remains hospitalized in Utah.

Chesky shared a detailed description of his medical emergency on Instagram, where he revealed that he suffered from a fever after hiking at Bryce Canyon and had trouble breathing during the Zion hike. Chesky was diagnosed with high altitude pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid builds up in the lungs and prevents oxygen from moving around the body. He is currently recovering in the hospital and thanked the staff for their care. Symptoms of HAPE include tightness in the chest, persistent cough, extreme fatigue and weakness, cyanosis, shortness of breath even when resting, confusion, and irrational behavior.
