A council meeting in Millbrae, California turned rowdy as residents protested the conversion of a hotel into homes for the homeless. Videos posted on social media showed residents loudly booing and jeering at the county executive, expressing frustration and asking how they could stop the proposal. Concerns were raised about the safety of housing the homeless near schools and families, as well as the impact on crime, drugs, and mental health in the neighborhood. The group responsible for operating the facility assured residents that the homeless would be living in supportive housing with 24/7 staffing and case management. The county has applied for state funds to carry out the project, which has a price tag of $33 million.
