The court's decision follows a similar case involving GOP members flouting a mask mandate. The Republicans argued that the fines violated the Constitution's 27th Amendment, but the court upheld the ruling that the judiciary doesn't have oversight of Congress. The metal detectors were removed in 2023 after Republicans gained a majority in the House, but the issue resurfaced when a lawmaker requested a rule to ban guns from a committee room.

Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley addressed the recent deadly school shooting in Nashville during a town hall in New Hampshire, stating that she wants more metal detectors in schools instead of gun control legislation. Haley called for schools to have one entrance and to use metal detectors there to protect children. She also expressed her opposition to taking away people's ability to protect themselves until measures are taken to protect children. The attacker in the Nashville shooting had three guns, including an AR-style rifle and pistol, and killed three children and three staff members before being killed by police.
