"Lab Leader Pleads No Contest to Manslaughter in 2012 Michigan Meningitis Deaths"

Barry Cadden, co-founder of the New England Compounding Center, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in Michigan for his role in a 2012 meningitis outbreak that resulted in about 100 deaths. He will serve a 10 to 15-year prison sentence concurrently with his existing 14 1/2-year federal sentence for fraud. Cadden had been awaiting trial on second-degree murder charges before reaching the plea deal.

Meningitis Outbreak Linked to Mexican Surgeries Leaves 2 Dead.

Two people in the US have died and over 200 others are at risk of fungal meningitis after an outbreak linked to two clinics in Matamoros, Mexico, where patients traveled for cosmetic surgeries. The CDC has urged people who had epidural anesthesia at these clinics to be tested for meningitis, even if they do not have symptoms. Health authorities in the US and Mexico have asked the World Health Organization to issue an emergency declaration in response to the outbreak. The CDC is working with Mexico's Ministry of Health and local health departments in 24 US states and the District of Columbia to respond to the outbreak and to contact people who officials know had surgery at the clinics.
