Corruption and Controversy Surround Memphis School Board

Former Vice Chair of Memphis-Shelby County Schools board, Sheleah Harris, resigned due to corruption and misuse of funds in the district. She called for an immediate external audit of the entire district going back at least five years. Harris found corruption in the district regarding contracts and manipulation in the superintendent search. Andre D Newsom, a beloved band director at Whitehaven High School, has passed away while on a band trip with his students in Atlanta. Newsom was a graduate of Tennessee State University, member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and an accomplished musician. The cause of death has not been released at this time. The Whitehaven High School community and Memphis-Shelby County Schools extend their condolences to his loved ones.

MSCS Faces Setbacks in Superintendent Search Process.

Memphis Shelby County Schools board members expressed disappointment with the finalists for the district's superintendent position, revealed by the search firm Hazard, Young, Attea, and Associates. Out of 34 applicants, the three finalists include Brenda Cassillius, Carlton Jenkins, and Tutonial 'Toni' Williams, who lacks the required 10 years of experience in teaching and school administration according to the district's policy. Board members and some community members expressed their disapproval of Williams being named a finalist and said the search firm can do better.
