Ford bets on megacasting to cut repair costs, eyes trucks to fill gaps

Ford is pursuing Tesla-inspired megacasting (unicasting) to streamline production via large unibody sections and to lower repair costs. New data suggests repairs on megacast/unibody designs are comparable to or cheaper than traditional methods, and Ford is shifting focus to its truck lineup to offset Escape sales declines. Despite the strategy, the stock slid about 1.5% after the news, while analysts maintain a Hold rating with a target around $13.95 (roughly 22% upside).

Volvo’s EX60 bets on 400-mile+ range and heavy tech upgrades

Volvo’s EX60 electric SUV (between the EX40 and EX90) is targeting a WLTP range of 503 miles (roughly 400+ miles EPA) with 800V architecture and 210 miles added in 10 minutes on a 400 kW charger. It uses cell-to-body construction and megacasting for a lighter, stiffer chassis, and debuts Google Gemini alongside Nvidia Drive Orin and a Snapdragon Cockpit Platform inside. The model includes Pilot Assist Plus up to 80 mph, a new multi-adaptive safety belt, and a Cross Country variant for a tougher look; design images show a lidar-free roofline unless the optional lidar is chosen. Deliveries are due around summer, with no price yet announced; the EX60 is electric-only, while a combustion XC60 remains in the lineup.
