Poland's Populist Uproar: Media Reforms Spark Government Backlash
Right-wing populists in Poland, led by the Law and Justice (PiS) party, are protesting against the new ruling pro-EU coalition's resolution to restore the impartiality and reliability of public media. The PiS party, which was accused of turning state-owned media into government propaganda mouthpieces, claims that media pluralism and strong anti-government media are essential for democracy. However, media NGOs and international watchdogs have criticized the PiS for partisan discourse and transforming public media into propaganda arms. The Culture Ministry has already sacked the chairpersons and boards of state television, radio, and news agency in line with the resolution.
