Ikea has launched 21 affordable Matter-compatible smart home devices, including smart bulbs, sensors, remotes, and a smart plug, all designed to be easy to use and integrate with existing smart home platforms, with availability starting as early as this month in select regions.
The rollout of Thread 1.4, which allows border routers from different manufacturers to join existing Thread networks, is delayed until at least 2026, causing fragmentation in smart home device connectivity. Apple is set to implement Thread 1.4 with tvOS 26 this fall, but other major players like Google, Amazon, and Samsung are still on Thread 1.3, with support expected next year. This delay prolongs the current issues of multiple separate Thread networks in homes, but the standard aims to unify these for a more reliable and extensive mesh network.
The redesigned Google Home app is now available for everyone, featuring a customizable favorites feed and a new UI for big-screen devices and Wear OS watches. Old Nest cameras are now supported in the app, and Matter devices work on iOS. The app is also faster, with 38% overall speed improvements for Nest cameras. Additionally, the Pixel Tablet is getting its own exclusive lock screen UI called Hub Mode, making smart home controls as instant as using your voice.
